Mental Memory Mapping - Palimpsests of the City
As part of our history course in Mexico City, we were required to produce a personal map of the city. With each history walk led by Professor Viktor, I chose to sketch our walking itinerary as I perceived it. We walked through various neighborhoods over the course of the ten weeks, including Centro, Roma, Condesa, Tacubaya, and San Angel. The process of documenting each walk included trying to capture as much information on site (itinerary, landmarks, etc.). Then later, I would fill in more detail using just memory of the walk. This led to a messy, raw, disorienting, perception of the neighborhood, but one I could relate to more. Combining these drawings overlaid on an actual map of Mexico City shows an exaggeration of scale in certain areas and overall impressions of the city.
