CCA_School of Music - Connection through a Public Hinge
The urban design proposal for the Cornish College of the Arts campus encourages public pavilions situated within each site, creating in-between paths and spaces. The School of Music has a unique opportunity more light and pass through due to the gas station directly southwest. The low profile gas station opens up the site, and the School of Music can be seen from the back corner just as clearly as from the front of 1st Ave N. This led to creating a “public hinge” that connected the alley and the street, allowing for public passage, shelter, and light. The underbelly of the theater creates shelter for this public hinge, and reveals itself through the slope. Private practice rooms surround the theater, enclosing the communal performance space. Larger rehearsal spaces are sunken below ground, allowing for better sound absorption. Pools of water are placed over these spaces with skylights to allow the reverberation of sound be translated into a ripple in the water.
